Why do we need Toothbrushes,Toothpaste & Floss now? They weren’t always around

Have you ever thought about the fact that your ancient ancestors never had to brush their teeth before bed? They would have no clue what toothpaste even is. There wasn’t a caveman supermarket for them to go to.

So what’s changed? Why do we need to brush our teeth now? Or did their dental hygiene suffer greatly.

Did Ancient People have Cavities?

No they did not, and they barely had any dental problems. So something must’ve been different back then, because in this day and age oral health problems are rampant.

What was different for them?

So there are several reasons why our ancestors didn’t suffer painful mouth problems like we do now.

Diet, then vs now

Back Then

The difference between our diets now versus back then, is HUGE. There was no McDonald’s or any processed foods at all, especially all that high sugar stuff we have now in fast-food, candies, chocolates etc.

Their diets only consisted of all natural foods, like vegetables, fruits & meat. Since these were unprocessed and didn’t contain any preservatives or harmful chemicals your teeth wouldn’t be affected negatively.

A big part of their healthy diet was the fact it was well balanced and they received all the vitamins, minerals & nutrients they needed. This made their teeth stronger and more resistant to dental problems which are common today. Common because we mostly eat junk food and processed food and get nowhere near the nutrients we need to have healthy teeth!

Furthermore, our ancestors loved to eat fibrous foods that naturally kept their teeth clean and stopped dental plaque building up. Almost like a natural toothbrush.

And what diets & lifestyle choices are like now

Smoking

Let’s start with cigarettes or drugs in general, we have them now, and our caveman ancestors didn’t. We all know that smoking is terrible for your oral health, not only does it stain your teeth and give you bad breath it has been linked to oral cancer.

High sugar, sweets, baked goods, processed foods!

All of the above, never used to exist, but now is just a common part of society. It would be weird if you DIDN’T eat donuts, cakes & croissants or consume soft drinks. However, these all lead to us having to brush our teeth regularly, or facing the consequences.

So what now?

Well now you know the difference between now and then and you can make your own decision! At least it’s obvious now, if we want to stop using toothbrushes, we have to drastically alter what we put in our mouths and how we treat our bodies in general.
