PREGNANCY AND YOUR TEETH

So you’re going to have a baby – congratulations!

You’ll have loads to think about in the coming months – but don’t forget your teeth.

Your body is undergoing many hormonal changes and you’ll probably change your diet. This can affect your gums (gingivitis).

You’ll also want to have all your teeth checked to make sure none of them has any underlying infection. Even low-grade infection is a complication you don’t need at this time.

In any case, you’ll probably relish a good teeth-cleaning session in your second trimester (after your morning sickness has passed).

At the same time, your dental hygienist can check for any signs of periodontal disease.

This is also a good time to start thinking about your baby’s teeth. If you have decay, your baby is more likely to as well.

Especially when you’re pregnant, you need to practise good oral hygiene:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste.
  • Make sure your toothbrush is in good condition
  • Floss your teeth daily
  • Rinse every night with an alcohol-free mouth rinse (if you are at risk of dental problems).

If you can’t brush your teeth after eating (because you’re out), chew xylitol-containing gum, which can help reduce bacteria that can cause tooth decay.

Get your pregnancy off to a safe start.
